The History Behind
H.M. Brown & Associates
H.M. Brown was founded in 1986 by Bud Brown. Bud’s degree was in engineering, but after a brief stint working at General Electric, he knew he had to do something related to his passion for cars. Growing up, he helped his dad out in the garage, went to races with him, and was an avid reader and collector of car magazines. Gasoline was in his blood.
He was also passionate about the mountains and outdoor activities like skiing and biking. After quitting GE, he moved to Golden and roomed with his brother for a while, who was a student at the Colorado School of Mines. Bud fell in love with Colorado and decided to find a way to stay. There were no design or manufacturing-related jobs in the area, so he went to work selling cars at a dealership.
With more technical knowledge than many of his colleagues, Bud quickly developed a reputation for understanding the ins and outs of every vehicle. Within three months, he was the top salesman.
A Better Way to Buy and Sell New & Used Cars
In spite of his success, he was persistently bothered by the feedback he heard from the customers. Why did the process have to take so long? Why were so many people involved with the transaction? Bud also disliked the adversarial nature of it all. Sales people competed against each other for business.
It was while reading an automotive journal that he came across an ad for an auto brokerage in California that was doing things differently. They sold every make and model, new and used, and offered financing and leasing options. One person handled the entire transaction. The face time with the customer was down to just one hour.
This was it. This was the answer to all his frustrations.
An Ongoing Legacy of Service and Commitment
With 18 months of experience selling cars and a passion for finding a better way, Bud founded his own car brokerage company. A tremendous amount of hard work and dedication to customer service paid off—just nine years later he was breaking ground on a new office building (with plenty of parking!) in Centennial.
Throughout its history, H.M. Brown & Associates has been built one customer at a time. To this day, we continue to improve on the key concepts that Bud developed: provide options and unbiased advice, treat customers with respect, and save them time and money.
With 93% of our business coming from referrals and repeat customers, we think we’re onto something! There is a better, more intelligent way to buy a car, and that’s what we provide.
